Description

"Gimme Hope Joanna" is a song written originally by Eddy grant in the early 1980s. The song served as an anthem in the South African anti-apartheid movement throughout the 80's, the song was so popular that the apartheid South African government at the time banned the song. It was released in the UK singles chart and became Grant's first Top 10 Hit for more than five years!

"Jo'anna" in the lyrics represents the then apartheid city of Johannesburg and the government of the time. When Grant mentions Soweto in the song he is referring to a black township near Johannesburg. The archbishop mentioned in the song is Desmond Tutu.

"She's got supporters in high up places, Who turn their heads to the city sun" represents the unwillingness of the international community, at first, to take action against the South African government for using the Apartheid system.
